Austria Charges Bwin.Party Execs with Bribery

Posted by admin | Casino Affiliates | Monday 29 February 2016 3:20 pm

Austrian officials have charged two Bwin.Party executives with bribery in relation to the company’s failed 2007 bid to obtain a Turkish sports betting license.

Norbert Teufelberger and Manfred Bodner were both charged with money laundering, breach of trust and corruption. The charges were laid against Teufelberger and Bodner were presented back on January 12, but only came to light after reporting by the Austrian language news site, Trend.at.

At issue is whether or not a lobbyist, one Ali Ocak, hired by the company to help procure a Turkish sports betting license, accepted more than 2 million Euros to bribe government officials to make that happen.

It seems as though no one is disputing the fact that more than 2 million Euro were transferred to a Lichtenstein-based company called, Cort International Establishment from Bwin.

Now what that money was used for is definitely in question.

For their part, Bwin.Party officials say that the money was merely a consulting fee for services rendered in relation to the Turkish license.

The Austrians, who got involved when Bwin.Party officials suggested that Cort International hadn’t used the money for its intended purposes (whatever that might have been).  They were especially disappointed to find out that their Turkish license was a flat-out fake.

When Austrian prosecutors caught wind of the story, they focused more on their suspicions that Bwin.Party was involved in bribery, rather than the fake license aspect of the story.

For their part, Bwin.Party’s lawyers are saying that the charges are completely without merit and that they expect Teufelberger and Bodner to be completely exonerated.

PokerStars Set for March New Jersey Online Poker Launch

Posted by admin | Casino Affiliates | Saturday 27 February 2016 3:17 pm

PokerStars is getting ready to launch its New Jersey online poker site on March 21. It’s the culmination of Amaya Gaming’s billion dollar gamble on the American market and the tail-end of the epic Black Friday saga.

The new site is being launched in partnership with Resorts Casino, per a New Jersey law that requires online operators to partner with land-based casinos. It’s a position that Resorts owner Morris Bailey clearly relishes.

In a statement to NorthJersey.com, Morris said:

Resorts Casino Hotel continues to be the preferred Atlantic City partner and home for outstanding global brands.First with Mohegan Sun and Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and now, with PokerStars joining that portfolio, Resorts is poised to offer players the best online and bricks & mortar casino experiences anywhere. We expect that the launch of PokerStars will further spur the positive momentum we have already made in the New Jersey online gaming market.

PokerStars’ re-entry into the US market did not come easily, nor did it come without a cost. Two years ago, Amaya Gaming purchased the tarnished PokerStars brand, and all its assets and liabilities, for $ 4.9 billion.

As part of that deal, they were required to remit every American player whose account had been frozen on Black Friday. That particular gesture went a long way towards buying the good graces of New Jersey gaming regulators who eventually granted Pokerstars a license.

Now that the piper’s been paid and PokerStars is free to serve the American market once again, the question remains whether or not Americans will be keen to return to PokerStars for their online poker action.

One Down, 49 to Go – Virginia Approves Daily Fantasy Sports Bill

Posted by admin | Casino Affiliates | Thursday 25 February 2016 3:16 pm

The Commonwealth of Virginia has become the first U.S. State to legalize and regulate daily fantasy sports. It’s the first good news the beleaguered daily fantasy sports industry has had since its free-fall began last October.

The Fantasy Contests Act (SB 646) was approved by both houses of the Virginia Legislature and is now awaiting  Governor Terry McCauliffe’s signature. If and when McCauliffe approves the measure, it will be the first piece of legislation of its kind in the United States.

It’s worth noting SB 6464 goes out of its way to distinguish daily fantasy sports from traditional sports betting. To that end, fantasy sports are limited to contests that are based on the performance of individual players, not teams and not individual players.

That means that anything with a point spread is still off-limits in the Commonwealth.

The bill’s authors also make it clear that they do not consider daily fantasy sports to be a form of gambling. That said, they pointedly avoid the game of skill vs. game of chance argument that’s been dogging the industry through its troubled times.

DFS operators that want to stay in Virginia’s good graces must also hire third party auditors to evaluate their processes and procedures. The issue of transparency, and potential insider trading, was the impetus for the industry’s massive free-fall in the fall of 2015.

Virginia lawmakers are also barring players who participate in a particular sport from playing DFS tournaments that involve their sport. (Thought Virginia doesn’t currently have an NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB team, it’s likely that players who play for Washington D.C. teams could live in the state.)

The big question now is whether other states will use the Virginia bill as a template for their own daily fantasy sports regulations.
